Workplace Eye Wellness Month

Friday, July 20th, 2018

March is Workplace Eye Health and Safety Month. Before you think that this topic does not apply to you, think again. Each day, over 2,000 Americans suffer an eye injury. This means that almost one million Americans have experienced some vision loss due to eye injury, which has resulted in more than $300 million in lost work time, medical expenses and workman’s compensation.

Best ways to protect from workplace eye injuries

~Safety wear is the best defense against eye injuries.
~Protect from common work hazards.
~Polycarbonate lenses are doctor recommended for safety glasses.

“Computer or Office lens is an excellent lens design for those working at a desk. The lenses usually allows you to see clearly from about 1 foot to 7 feet, without having to search for the “sweet spot” as in progressives or odd head positions. You can always add anti-glare, UV, and blue filter coatings to further relaxing and protecting your eyes.”

Save Your Vision Month

Friday, July 20th, 2018

National Save Your Vision Month designates the month of March to promote eye health. This year, the American Optometric Association is promoting awareness around digital eyestrain and the importance of receiving regular, comprehensive eye exams from a doctor of optometry.

The AOA’s campaign will focus specifically on blue light’s impact on overall health. According to 2016 AOA Eye-Q survey data, the average American spends seven hours per day using digital devices. Overexposure to blue light due to smartphones, tablets and other technology use for extended periods of time can cause vision damage, sleep problems and more. By analyzing data, research and trends, this campaign will provide tips on preventing digital eye strain while at home or work.

Glaucoma Awareness Month

Thursday, July 19th, 2018

National Glaucoma Awareness Month is an important time to spread the word about this sight-stealing disease.

Currently, more than 3 million people in the United States have glaucoma. The National Eye Institute projects this number will reach 4.2 million by 2030, a 58 percent increase.

  • Early Symptoms:  None
  • Later Symptoms: Loss of side (peripheral) vision, blindness
  • Diagnosis:  Dilated eye exam
  • Treatment: Medicine (usually eye drops), laser treatment, surgery

What is glaucoma?

Glaucoma is a group of eye diseases that can cause vision loss and blindness by damaging a nerve in the back of your eye called the optic nerve.

The symptoms can start so slowly that you may not notice them. The only way to find out if you have glaucoma is to get a comprehensive dilated eye exam.

There’s no cure for glaucoma, but early treatment can often stop the damage and protect your vision.

Eye Injury Prevention Month

Tuesday, July 17th, 2018

With half of all eye injuries happening in the home, we could all use a gentle reminder about the importance of eye safety. The American Academy of Ophthalmologists sponsors Eye Injury Prevention Month every October to reinforce the importance of preventing accidents and injury. This is appropriate because the World Health Organization’s World Sight Day is observed on the second Thursday of October each year to bring attention to blindness and vision impairment.
