ADHD Awareness Month is observed every October to improve understanding of attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder, reduce stigma, and connect people with reliable information and support. It encourages greater understanding at home, in schools, and in the workplace. Attention Deficit Disorder Association
ADHD is a developmental condition that affects attention, activity levels, and impulse control. Symptoms begin in childhood and can continue into adulthood, although some people are diagnosed later in life. Common challenges include:
- Inattention: Difficulty staying focused, organizing tasks, remembering details, or following through.
- Hyperactivity: Restlessness, fidgeting, or difficulty remaining still.
- Impulsivity: Interrupting, difficulty waiting, or acting before considering the consequences.
People may experience mainly inattentive symptoms, mainly hyperactive and impulsive symptoms, or a combination. These difficulties can affect school, work, relationships, and everyday responsibilities. nimh.nih.gov
The month also highlights that effective treatment and support can improve daily functioning. Depending on a person’s age and needs, care may include medication, behavioral therapy, organizational strategies, and support at school or work. A qualified healthcare professional can evaluate symptoms and recommend appropriate care. nimh.nih.gov
For an employee wellness program, you could recognize the month by sharing trusted educational resources, hosting an ADHD awareness discussion, and highlighting available mental health or Employee Assistance Program resources.
