World Hepatitis Day
Observed: July 28, 2027
World Hepatitis Day is observed worldwide each year on July 28 to raise awareness of viral hepatitis and encourage greater access to prevention, testing, treatment, and care. Hepatitis is an inflammation of the liver that can lead to serious complications, including chronic liver disease, cirrhosis, liver failure, and liver cancer.
The observance brings attention to the five main hepatitis viruses—A, B, C, D, and E—which differ in how they are transmitted, prevented, and treated. Hepatitis B and C are of particular concern because they can become chronic and may remain undetected for many years. Many people experience few or no symptoms until significant liver damage has already occurred.
World Hepatitis Day also emphasizes that much of the illness and death caused by viral hepatitis is preventable. Vaccines are available for hepatitis A and B, effective treatments can control hepatitis B, and modern antiviral medications can cure most hepatitis C infections. Expanded vaccination, safer healthcare practices, accessible testing, early diagnosis, and affordable treatment are essential to reducing new infections and preventing avoidable deaths.
July 28 was selected in honor of Nobel Prize–winning scientist Dr. Baruch Blumberg, who discovered the hepatitis B virus and helped develop both a diagnostic test and a vaccine. In 2027, healthcare organizations, employers, community groups, and individuals can observe World Hepatitis Day by sharing reliable information, encouraging appropriate testing and vaccination, addressing stigma, and helping connect people with qualified medical care.
The official campaign theme for World Hepatitis Day 2027 has not yet been released. Until it is announced, awareness materials should focus on the continuing global goals of improving prevention, finding people who remain undiagnosed, removing barriers to care, and working toward the elimination of viral hepatitis as a public health threat.
