Food for Life Nutrition and Cooking Demonstration classes reach 10,000 people a year both in the US and Internationally. A program created by the Physicians Committee for Responsible Medicine in Washington DC and launched in 2001, Food for Life classes equip students to eat foods that promote health and fight disease. The classes designed by physicians, nutrition experts, and registered dietitians, work to translate complex scientific nutrition information into simple and easy meals.

Each Food for Life nutrition and cooking class features a nutrition lecture and live cooking demonstration all within a supportive group setting.

How do you know if Food for Life classes are right for you?

Food for Life Classes:

  • According to the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics, “Appropriately planned vegetarian diets, including total vegetarian or vegan diets, are healthful, nutritionally adequate, and may provide health benefits in the prevention and treatment of certain diseases.”

    Kickstart your Health – is about losing weight, maintaining a healthy weight, or simply embracing an overall healthful diet. The curriculum is based on PCRM’s successful 21-Day Vegan Kickstart program, which has helped thousands of people adopt a plant-based diet to reach their health goals. Lower cholesterol, better diabetes control, lower blood pressure, as well as improvements in energy and mood are some of the many benefits people experience on this diet.

    The Cancer Project – discusses a variety of cancer-related nutrition topics and demonstrates how to prepare several meals loaded with antioxidants and phytochemicals, high-fiber and low-fat foods, and healthy dairy alternatives. The series also provides information on planning meals and maintaining a healthy weight.

    Diabetes Initiative – empowers people who have diabetes and those concerned about developing diabetes, along with their friends and family members with new information and skills. Each class offers a cooking demonstration, and provides samples of delicious, health-promoting dishes, along with a take-home packet of easy and affordable recipes.

    Employee Wellness Program – brings Food for Life classes into the workplace. This is a unique opportunity to improve the health and wellness of employees. A Physicians Committee study published in the European Journal of Clinical Nutrition, American Journal of Health Promotion, Annals of Nutrition and Metabolism, and Public Health Nutrition found that companies that offer employees a low-fat plant-based diet in the office can help workers lose weight and improve diabetes.

    Kids Health – encourages children ages 9-12 establish healthy habits and to focus on the positives of the four foods groups: grains, legumes, fruits, and vegetables. The classes expose children to the great taste and benefits of eating a plant-based diet using kid-friendly recipes approved by dietitians.

    Healthy Basics –helps class participants understand the value of choosing economical plant-based foods—fruits, vegetables, grains, and beans—that can provide savings from lowered grocery and medical costs. In Healthy Basics classes, attendees will discover the relationship between diet and disease, get tips on planning a weekly or monthly menu, and enjoy cooking demonstrations and tasting delicious, healthful dishes in a supportive group setting.

    Nutrition Essentials – encourages class attendees to discover that the guiding principle for weight loss and good health is not restricting the amount of food they eat, but rather choosing the right foods—fruits, vegetables, grains, and legumes. Attendees may experience clinical benefits such as lower cholesterol, better diabetes control, and lower blood pressure, as well as improvements in energy and mood. Results are likely to be immediate and impressive!
