About
Next Step is an organization that empowers young people with chronic illnesses as they experience emergent adulthood. We work with young people 13-29 years old who are living with both the immediate and long-term impact of cancer, HIV/AIDS or rare genetic disorders. Our programs focus on community building, songwriting and mentorship, offer psychosocial and emotional support, reinforce self-advocacy and readiness for adult care, and are free of cost. Within our judgment-free, peer-driven spaces, young people with diverse identities can build connections and a growth mindset.
While the transition to adulthood and independent living is always challenging, it is even more so for a young person managing a life-threatening diagnosis, intense medical treatment, and/or serious health issues. Organizations that focus on helping the young people on this journey are virtually nonexistent. The need for Next Step programming is profound.
