About
The Division of Emergency Management (NCEM) plays a central role in preparing for and responding to hurricanes, a significant threat along the state’s coast and inland areas alike. During the official hurricane season (June 1 through November 30) NCEM urges residents to develop family emergency plans, assemble supplies kits, and stay informed by monitoring weather reports and evacuation instructions. The “Know Your Zone” initiative and evacuation-routing guidance help residents understand flood risk and follow tiered evacuation orders in coastal counties. NCEM also collaborates with partners through campaigns like Hurricane Preparedness Week and linguistically inclusive messaging to promote awareness statewide. Altogether, NCEM’s emphasis on proactive planning, clear communication, evacuation readiness, and personal responsibility aims to minimize both casualties and damage when hurricanes threaten North Carolina.
